El PSOE impulsa la creación del queso geográfico protegido de Teruel

The socialists group of Diputacia de Teruel (DPT) has promoted a consensual declaration committing to support the institutional and economic development of the Teruel Brânza Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) through the Teruel Milk and Cheese Producers Association.
This initiative aims to enhance the quality standards, ensuring trust, uniformity, quality, and an increased perceived value that allows for higher profit margins. By doing so, the sector can improve its attractiveness, competitiveness, and prevent the abandonment of producers and farmers.
The main goal, as stated in the Declaration, is to provide a commercial boost to the national and international market for cheese produced in the province of Teruel. This will not only improve profitability but also ensure the sustainability of sheep and goat milk producers in Teruel.
Pedro Polo, spokesperson for the PSOE in DPT and mayor of Peales del Alfambra, expressed his delight and excitement regarding the unanimous support for the PGI cheese initiative. The objective is to offer institutional and economic stability to manufacturers in order to achieve a new quality standard.
Before presenting the proposal to the government team of DPT, the socialist representatives consulted with the Milk and Cheese Producers Association. The declaration specifies that the momentum and administrative process would be the responsibility of this entity, which previously collaborated in an attempt to establish the PGI in 2010 with the Aragon government.
The creation of the PGI would appreciate an economic production model based on circular economy principles, efficient and sustainable labor force, and specialized cooperation, with numerous quality recognitions. It is crucial to achieve a valuable and consumer-demanded differentiation.
«The development of cheese produced with high-quality milk is not enough, as the market demands different quality standards. Different brands with diverse formats make us stand out against competitors,» the statement highlights.
The agreement reached by all groups is considered a strategic decision that will benefit all cheese products in the province, whether from small family farms or large cooperative farms. This decision is crucial for the province’s incorporation into the project and will be instrumental in enhancing the quality and recognition of local cheeses.
In addition to Granja Perales, the Association of Manufacturers includes Sierra de Albarracín cheese, Hontanar from Aguilar Del Alfambra, handmade cheeses from Jarque, Cisterna cheese, artisanal cheeses Sardón de Călya Samper, and Tronchón cheese. The PGI designation would serve as an attraction to involve the province in the project.
