El Festival de Cine de Málaga cierra su 28 edición con «Sorda», «The Dog Thief» y «Los Tortuga» como triunfadores

The XXVIII edition of the Malaga Film Festival ended on Saturday night with the closing Gala held at the Teatro Cervantes. The films «Sorda,» «The Dog Thief,» and «Los Tortuga» were crowned as the big winners of the competition.
«Sorda» is a protest against the mandate of having to fit everyone into the same mold,» said director Eva Libertad, who expressed her gratitude for the public award recognizing the film as a meeting point for both deaf and hearing audiences.
She described her film as a «tribute» to her sister, lead actress Miriam Garlo, emphasizing that filmmaking is a collaborative effort where creativity, intelligence, and sensitivity come together for a common purpose.
«We are Bolivians, extremely proud, and this award also belongs to all Bolivians making their mark worldwide,» said Eduardo Calla, distributor of the Best Iberian-American Film, «The Dog Thief.»
Director Gerard, recipient of the Critics’ Jury award for «Molt Lluny (FAR),» praised the lead actor of the film, Mario Casas, acknowledging his dedication and sensitivity in his performance.
Casas, who shared the Best Male Performance award with Álvaro Cervantes for «Sorda,» expressed his gratitude and reminisced about their roles in «Three Steps Above Heaven.»
«Málaga is a festival that warms your heart every time you attend,» said Cervantes, dedicating his award to his sister and also recognizing the Best Lead Actress winner, Angela Cervantes, for «Fury.»
The emotional recipients of the awards shared their appreciation for the recognition and highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion in the film industry.
The Gala also featured presentations of various awards, including Best Direction for «Los Tortuga,» Best Public Award for «Ocho,» and acknowledgments for Best Female Performance and Best Music.
The event concluded with performances by artists such as Xoel López and Malaga El Kanka, bringing a lively end to the night’s celebrations.
