España confía en nuevo gobierno de transición para una Siria pacífica

The Spanish government welcomed the new transitional government announced by President Ahmed Al on Saturday, hoping it will be a «step forward» towards a peaceful and inclusive Syria after the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime in December.
«Spain welcomes the new transitional government in Syria, which should represent a step forward towards achieving a peaceful and inclusive Syria that guarantees territorial unity and the integrity of the Foreign Ministry,» a statement said.
The government also pledged to maintain its support for the Syrian people and to continue coordinating «with partners and European countries in the region to contribute to the stabilization of Syria and peace in the Middle East.»
Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares visited Damascus in mid-January to meet with the new authorities led by Al Shara, the leader of the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS), formerly known by his nom de guerre Abymed Al Golani.
Albares had already stated that Spain was in favor of a gradual easing of sanctions, as long as the new Syrian authorities have ensured respect for women and minorities, especially ethnic and religious minorities, as well as the territorial integrity of the country.
After the wave of violence on the country’s coast, where the Alawite minority largely resides, to which former President Assad belongs, the Spanish government expressed condemnation and emphasized the need for accountability by those responsible.
