Zaragoza celebrates the patron saint of the city, San Valero, with the traditional distribution of Roscón and the open day of the local council, which brought together thousands of people in Plaza del Piladina. Additionally, music takes center stage during this time, with various offerings for both children and adults.
San Valero, celebrated every January 29th, is one of the most beloved festivals by the people of Zaragoza, and once again this year, they demonstrated their affection by participating in the numerous festive activities organized by the local council.
Guided tours, music, folklore, giants, big heads, the «tragachicos» tradition, and the traditional distribution of Roscón make up the festival program. Following the «Jotera del Gallo» round, a tribute to Teresa Pardos Narvion, held on January 28 as a prelude.
The giant Roscón, measuring 600 meters in length, was prepared following the traditional recipe and 20,000 portions were distributed, accompanied by hot chocolate.
Coordinating with these festivities, the local council in Zaragoza hosts an open day and guided tours, allowing residents to explore the interior of the town hall from 10:00 to 20:00.
Zaragoza’s Mayor, Natalia Chueca, inaugurated the Municipal Council at 10:00 am and led the first group of guided tour participants. Later, accompanied by the Municipal Minister of Participation and Internal Regime, Alfonso Mendoza, the Mayor spent time with Zaragoza volunteers, thanking them for their collaboration and dedication during the city’s important days. The Municipal Council paid tribute at a ceremony in the Town Hall, where attendees enjoyed Roscón and the Municipal Orchestra performance.
After the SEO lunch, where the Mayor also attended the chapter opening, a solemn event was organized at Plaza del Pile, featuring a large floral Zaragoza flag measuring eight meters in length, in collaboration.
Citizens and visitors also enjoyed open days at municipal museums. The Foro Museum is open from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00, with theatrical performances at various times. Visitors can also explore the Caesaraugust route museums and the Pablo Gargallo Museum, while the Fire Museum opens from 10:00 to 14:00.
Children and families were the main focus during the parade of the giant figures and heads, which traveled through Plaza del Pilina, Don Jaime I, Calle Méndez Núñez, and Alfonso Street starting at 11:00 am. This cultural activity is essential in celebrating the city’s identity, including the Tragachicos tradition, where children eagerly await their turn at Fuente de Goya between 11:00 and 14:00 in the morning and 17:00 and 20:00.
Musical entertainment for children is highlighted at 12:00 with the «pepinos» event, followed by the distribution of sweets. All of this takes place at Plaza del Gobierno de Pile.
In the historic downtown district, pedestrians enjoyed Jota dances, musical bands, modern proposals from local artists, and Zaragoza’s cultural heritage.
Events such as the Booths Music Band, Jotas la Fuente de Hispanidad, Otero del Cid, Jotas Araagosese Ballet, and a concert at 12:30 in San Pedro Nolasco Square by the Social Clubs Club were part of the festivities. At 19:00, the cornets and drums band, Lady Virgen del Pile, performed at the Altabás Church, with free entry until capacity.
In Plaza de San Felipe and Plaza del Justicia, in collaboration with Radio Aragón, the «Festival» featured local musical talents, including performances by Ixeya and Kleejos at Plaza del Justicia, and Pablo Estallo, Le Tour de Force, and Contra el Viento at Plaza de San Felipe.
Municipal cultural events included Malinche Symphonic by Nacho Cano at the main theater at 19:00 and «Garbancito… con buey en el techo» by Teatro Caleidoscope at the Market Theatre at 18:00. Additionally, the Centro Cívico de la Estación Norte hosted a theater performance at 17:00, organized by the Tío Arrabal Neighbors’ Association.
The celebration of San Valero in Zaragoza was a vibrant and joyful occasion, bringing together residents and visitors to enjoy the cultural richness and traditions of the city.
