Visita de Edmundo González a Argentina para reunirse con Javier Milei

«Welcome Mr. President,» exclaimed thousands of Venezuelans who gathered in Buenos Aires since Saturday morning, in front of the Argentine government headquarters, to greet Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González, who will be received by President Javier Milei as part of the international tour he is conducting in several Latin American countries.

The former diplomat’s tour comes days before the agreed date for the presidential inauguration in Venezuela, which is living in uncertainty after controversial elections in which both President Nicolás Maduro and the opposition claim victory. González stated that he will return to the Venezuelan nation to assume the leadership of the State.

The former candidate landed in Buenos Aires on Friday afternoon, where he will not only meet with Milei at the Casa Rosada, but will also have conversations with Argentine officials and legislators, as reported by his team.

«We send a warm and affectionate message, especially to all political prisoners and asylum seekers at the Argentine embassy in Caracas; «This is and will be our concern in all the meetings we will have,» González said in a post X in Buenos Aires, referring to Venezuelan opposition members sheltered in the Argentine mission in Venezuela.

It is Edmundo González’s first international tour since he was granted political asylum in Spain in September, due to what he described as an attempt of persecution and arrests by the Maduro government, which the opposition accuses of committing electoral fraud that would give victory to Edmundo González.

Recently, the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office offered a reward of $100,000 to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of Edmundo González. On Friday, dozens of «Wanted» posters with the image of the former diplomat could be seen at the Simón Bolívar International Airport, on the outskirts of Caracas.

«It is deeply moving that Argentina is the first Latin American country visited by the elected president of Venezuela, Edmundo González,» said Elisa Trotta, former ambassador of interim Venezuelan president Juan Guaidó in Argentina and human rights activist.

Trotta added that Argentina «has proven to be an example of solidarity, welcoming Venezuelans with generosity and constantly supporting our fight to save freedom and democracy.»
