Santiago lidera manifestación en defensa del gallego antes de «emergencia lingüística extrema» el domingo

Alameda Compostelana will organize a demonstration this Sunday starting at noon, convened by the platform Queremos Gaigo under the slogan «Lingua Vital Xa!». The event aims to address the linguistic challenges faced by the Galician language and calls for a change in attitude from the Xunta.

The demonstration, scheduled for Rosalia Day, will start at 12:00 in Alameda de Santiago and will be led by Praza do Obradider, a location that holds great significance for the Galician population. During the mobilization presentation, the spokesperson for the platform and president of the linguistic normalization association Mesa Pola, Marcos Maceira, emphasized the importance of the general plan for normalization in reviving the Galician language as a true pact for its revitalization.

Maceira stressed the need for action, denouncing the lack of a Galician pact from the Xunta and urging for a boost in the Galician language, which is vital for Galicia. He drew parallels to Rosalia’s impact on Galician literature and expressed hope that her birthday would mark the resurgence of the language with the commitment and participation of the Galician people.

In a similar context, last November, thousands of individuals gathered at Lee de Quintana with the same goal, mobilized by the initiative We Want Galego under the motto «Nos Movemos ou, por suposto, Pola Futura do Galego». Songs like «In Gaigo Na Geliza», «Queremos Galego», and «Medre Galego» resonated through the market of Compostela during a massive open assembly, culminating in a call for social mobilization on the upcoming Sunday.

Maceira, speaking to the media, emphasized the potential of the language to flourish given the right circumstances. Both BNG and PSDEG, represented by Ana Ponton and José Ramón Gómez Besteiro respectively, have encouraged participation and will be present at the demonstration. On the other hand, PPDEG acknowledges the right to mobilize but views the call as politicized.

With a focus on the Galician pact meetings and the exclusive will of this agreement, BNG highlighted the efforts of professionals working on linguistic normalization in Galician municipalities. Minister of Culture, Lingua e Xuventude, José López Campos, denounced a boycott following a commission meeting to update the plan, attributing it to a radicalized sector aiming to obstruct debate.

Maceira warned of an inexplicable unilateral approach at the initial meeting, noting a diverse composition with the exception of a small known group in certain areas. The demonstration seeks to address the linguistic challenges faced by the Galician language and calls for a change in attitude from the Xunta.
