No estamos seguros de desear la paz

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union, and European Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, raised concerns about the «balms» that Russian President Vladimir Putin presented in response to a high-level ceasefire proposal in Ukraine approved by the United States and supported by Kiev.
Putin emphasized the need for this initiative to address the «roots» of the Ukrainian conflict to ensure peace. Albares questioned the contrast between how Ukrainian President Zelenski talks about peace without conditions and how Putin presents numerous conditions, raising doubts about the sincerity of the peace process.
While Spain and Europe are committed to supporting peace efforts, Albares stressed the importance of a concrete and lasting peace, rather than a temporary ceasefire between conflicts. He also acknowledged Ukraine’s demand for guarantees of peace due to its history of Russian aggression and the ongoing conflict.
In a national context, Albares highlighted the opportunity for peace with the new administration of Donald Trump and emphasized the need for Spain to maintain a central role in European security redesign. He criticized the opposition parties for their lack of unity and their attempts to hinder government initiatives, particularly in matters like military spending.
Albares also addressed the issue of parliamentary control over military expenses, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability. He criticized the PP leader for his lack of vision and willingness to engage constructively in the country’s defense policies.
Regarding the «no to war» slogan worn by the leader of Podemos during a meeting with Sánchez, Albares reiterated Spain’s commitment to international law and peace. He refuted accusations of warmongering against Sánchez, asserting that the President is committed to peace despite external pressures.
In conclusion, Albares emphasized that the message of «no to war» should be directed towards Moscow, as Europe did not seek conflict in Ukraine. He underscored the need for genuine peace negotiations to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and ensure a lasting and comprehensive peace agreement.
