Debate with Presidents Costa and Von der Leyen on the challenges facing the EU

Starting at 9:00 a.m., Members of the European Parliament will evaluate the outcome of the European Council meeting on March 20 with European Council President Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The summit focused on EU competitiveness, Ukraine, defense and security, the Middle East, the EU’s next long-term budget, migration, and multilateralism.

Debate with Kaja Kallas on EU foreign strategies, security, and defense

Around 1:00 p.m., Members of the European Parliament and the High Representative will discuss the EU’s common goals, defense, and security policies for 2025. MEPs will call for more investments in defense, including increased military and political support for Ukraine. They also seek a stronger EU presence in the Middle East, closer ties with like-minded partners, and support for EU candidates. Two related reports, one on foreign and security policy and another on security and defense policy, will be presented on Wednesday for a plenary vote, followed by a press conference at 2:30 p.m.

Intending to enhance EU security and preparedness

Starting at 3:00 p.m., MEPs will question Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Security Magnus Brunner about the new EU internal security strategy to be unveiled today. Immediately after, the Plenary will react to the proposal put forward last week to increase crisis training in the EU, in a debate with Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib.

Sustainability and due diligence: Vote on the expedited search for the «stop of the day» proposal

During a lunchtime vote, MEPs will decide whether to implement the urgent procedure for the proposal to delay the implementation of new sustainability and due diligence measures for certain companies. If MEPs agree to fast-track the legislation project, the delayed vote will take place on Thursday.

In brief

Russian war crimes in Ukraine. Around 10:45 a.m., MEPs and Kaja Kallas will discuss the need to respond to Russia for its war crimes in Ukraine.

Türkiye. MEPs will discuss the latest developments in Türkiye with Commissioner Marta Kos, including the arrest of the Mayor of Istanbul, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Gaza. In a debate with Kaja Kallas from 8:00 p.m., agents are expected to call for an immediate halt in Gaza and the continued release of Israeli hostages by Hamas.

Radio Free Europe/Freedom Radio. From 6:00 p.m., in a plenary debate with Kaja Kallas, parliamentarians will discuss how to safeguard access to democratic media, given the uncertainty surrounding U.S. funding for Radio Free Europe/Freedom Radio.

Human rights worldwide. Around 2:00 p.m., MEPs will examine the EU’s human rights and democracy policy with Kaja Kallas. They will vote on the Parliament’s annual report on this topic on Wednesday.

At 12:00 p.m., MEPs will vote on, among other topics:

  • Financial aid to Jordan and Egypt,
  • The «one substance, one assessment» package, and
  • Appointment of the Romanian candidate for the European Court of Auditors.
