El nuevo Parque Portillo será el tercero más grande en Zaragoza, ocupando 9 hectáreas.

The Zaragoza Government has approved on Friday the urbanization project of the surroundings of the Portillo station, which will become the third largest park in the city, after José Antonio Lungeta and the water park, with 9 hectares, 19,000 square meters of areas, areas for children, sports spaces, and canine areas.

The project, which is now open to public information after being unblocked this week in Zaragoza’s high-speed rail state, has a budget of 33.8 million euros and an execution period of 14 months, with 25% funded by the City Council and 25% by the Government of Aragón. Mayor Natalia Chueca stated that the forecast is to start the work by the end of the year and have the new park ready by early 2027.

Chueca celebrated that, 20 years later, Zaragoza will put an end to the «scar» and the «waste» in the surroundings of the old station, which has been a physical barrier between the Delicias and Centro districts. She emphasized that it is not normal to have such a hole in the middle of the city.

The project covers the area between Escoriaza and Fabro streets, Anselmo Clavé Avenue, Escrivá de Balaguer, the roundabout of Ciudadanía, and the roundabout of Zagrinos. In addition to the park, it will involve the renovation of the three roads that delimit it.

Furthermore, the green area will include 703 trees, with a total of 48,800 square meters of net green space and almost 20,000 square meters. This initiative aims to help Zaragoza achieve its goal of being a climate-neutral city. With four playgrounds for children, rest areas, walking paths, and a 1.4-kilometer bike lane, the new park will provide a much-needed green lung in the congested city center.

Chueca also highlighted the park’s design, which will feature various themed areas, such as a fitness area, children’s play platform, canine area, sports platform with basketball and ping-pong courts, among others. The park will also have water features, including areas for children, families, and young people, promoting active play and interaction.

In conclusion, the urbanization project around the Portillo station represents a significant improvement for Zaragoza, creating a new green space that will enhance the quality of life for residents and contribute to the city’s sustainability goals.
