The Government Delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, confirmed the closure of the National Police units in Plaza Alta de Badajoz, a technical decision taken by that body to which the Mayor of the city, Ignacio Gragera, reiterated that he did not share. He believes that the «permanent» presence of this body in the Old City «provides additional security» to an environment that, on the other hand, is «safe.»
They spoke in statements to the media after holding a meeting in which the head of the National Police in Extremadura, Elisa Fariñas, was also present; the regional head of National Police operations, Manuel Veaga; the lower governmental of Badajoz, Maribel Cortés; the first deputy mayor Carlos Urueña; the superintendent of the local police in Badajoz, Rubén Muñoz.
In his speech, José Luis Quintana indicated that the closure «is an exclusive police decision» and that, therefore, to improve the security of the city of Badajoz, the decision is taken by the National Police, understanding that they will use resources to act better. «And, in addition,» the closure of these units manages to put more personnel on the street, which is where he believes can be done.»
In this sense, he indicated that the historic center is «safe» and that the crime rates in Badajoz in 2024 decreased compared to 2023, as evidenced in the fiscal position that recognizes it, which was also a councilor and understands that he affirms that it is «good» for the city.
For his part, the Mayor of Badajoz thanked this «quick» arranged meeting for this Tuesday and the delegate for participating in this issue, «although, obviously, the opinions or views on this particular matter.» «I consider it and I expressed it in the meeting and also declared publicly that the permanent presence of the National Police in the Old City area provides additional security.»
Gragera agrees with Quintana that «there is no need to doubt the safety of the historic center,» although there have been moments and situations «where, as in all places, some criminal acts» can occur, «but in any case, it is safe.» «It is true and I believe that the efficient and permanent presence of the police in a place, national or local, offers this additional security and, above all, discourages the commission of criminal offenses,» making «those tempted to commit crimes do not do so in that environment,» because «this presence continues to work.»
