The Euro MP and spokesperson for the PPE Agriculture Committee, Carmen Cresso, called for «proactive diplomacy» from Europe and Spain to try to stop the possible tariff on bourbon tariffs from the United States that the Trump administration has already responded to in 2018.
«The world has gone crazy with tariffs and this benefits no one,» said the MEP in an interview with Europa in which he stated that with these taxes on goods crossing international borders, «everyone loses: Americans and Europeans.»
Cresso emphasized that these types of measures do not imply «a good agro-food policy,» so it is necessary to eliminate American whiskey with tariff rates, so that the activity of wineries is not compromised, as Spanish exports have emphasized an average annual 7.5 billion euros in bulbs, spirits, and sparks.
«Neither bourbon, nor left.
In this sense, he believes that Spain should «position this problem,» given the importance of the sector at the European level and in exports to the other side of the Atlantic. «We cannot leave it at a standstill,» he also had to resort to Spanish diplomacy and avoid tariff conditions in the primary sector, which is «the agro-functional guarantee.»
With this, he turned to a «solid» multi-year financial framework to support the primary sector at the European level, as it emanates the budget for the limit, regardless of financing from other fields, such as defense in this new international context.
«If this is not the case, we will not have been successful in the primary sector, because now, if we have to defend ourselves, and we have to have security, the greatest security that exists, in addition to defense, is food security,» he said.
With this, he influenced the 800,000 million euros to establish between the 27 countries and the European Union, on the one hand, «protecting» the first pillar of the limit, in which «all farmers must enter»; and, on the other hand, to be able to offer the second pillar enough to seek «innovation in rural areas and the agricultural sector.»
Cresso has highlighted the importance of the resources of the multi-year financial framework, which «is a third of what is used in the European Union,» so that the main «competitive» and its production costs «are not so high.» «It has to continue to exist and it must be in this proportion,» he said.
