The opening of any season of Doctor Who is crucial, especially when there is a new co-star to introduce. «The Robot Revolution» must captivate us to fall in love with Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu), to attract new fans and retain existing ones. This is particularly important as it is the second of the two series that Disney has funded, meaning it has to perform well enough to keep the money flowing.
We open «17 years ago» with Belinda Chandra, gazing at the stars with her lover, Alan Budd (Jonny Green). A painful teenager, Alan tries to win her heart by buying one of those adoption certificates. In 2025, Belinda is now a nurse in a busy hospital in London, where in the background, the Doctor is looking for her.
Belinda goes home and we see she has the star ownership certificate on her wall. But she is rudely awakened by a team of 1950s retro-futurists in a tinted rocket who came to abduct both her and the certificate. The Doctor arrives at her home just in time to see the rocket take off and roll the opening credits.
The certificate was no present gag, and it turns out Belindachandra is the queen of the planet Belindachandra, populated by Belindachandrians (I’ll call them people from now on). The Doctor pursues in the TARDIS, but both the rocket and the TARDIS are stuck in a vaguely defined time rift. When Belinda arrives, she is greeted by Human Sasha55, who tells her that the robots are responsible, nullifying and subjugating the people in a bloody rebellion before.
«Oh, it’s a bit like Jupiter Ascending,» I wrote in my notes.
Belinda is taken to a tronic room, where she is told she must merge with the planet’s supercomputer governor, the Generator AI. Generator AI, all skull shapes and Tesla coils, intends to «merge» with Belinda. She is shown an animated demonstration of her fate, as she is enveloped in car parts and turned into an unimaginable cyborg.
«Oh, that’s a bit terrifying Superman III,» I wrote in my notes.
Who has been lurking in the background with the time? The Doctor, who adopted the title of planetary historian. In the ensuing fight, Sasha55 is vaporized, much to the horror and grief, acknowledged by the Doctor.

«Oh, like the floor-cleaning robot MO in Wall-E,» I wrote in my notes.
…Escape through a teleporter, after which the Doctor deactivates the Roomba to ensure the robots cannot follow them, then kisses the snout in apology. Then comes the moment for the episode to pause as we see the Doctor and Belinda interact properly for the first time. The Doctor was informed about Belinda’s situation by someone in his future and cannot say more so as not to confuse the timeline.
The time rift that both ships have passed through has caused many time-bending issues, as the robots have their own copy of Belinda’s star certificate. But it’s not a copy, it’s the same object from another time and no one knows how or why they have it. Belinda, like Sunday Ruby before her, is savvy enough in time-travel to know that two of the same objects from different points in time cannot occupy the same space, so it does not cause an explosion.

There are casualties at the base, and Belinda instantly switches into nurse mode, grabbing IVs and treating patients. She takes charge quickly and has no patience for nonsense, swiftly shutting down any hint of condescension when the Doctor suggests something about «timey-wimey stuff.» She refuses to let anyone fight her battles for her and is determined to seize the narrative and shape it her way, regardless of the costs. She then slips, reactivates the rooms, and offers the robots in exchange for them, having spared the lives of the rebels.
Belinda and the Doctor are taken to meet the AI generator, which turns out to be… the AI generator. When Belinda was abducted by robots, she mentioned that her former Alan bought the certificate and thus they were abducted. But the time rift meant that Alan arrived a decade earlier, merged by the car (becoming a terrifying cyborg) and started the robot uprising.
Still, Belinda is willing to sacrifice until she realizes that Alan holds the copy certificate. She chooses to «time» the two pieces of paper together, causing a long explosion of time from which only the Doctor can remove it. Belinda is safe, but the Doctor mentions that he is now intertwined with Belinda’s era pillar. Meanwhile, Alan has been reduced to a sperm on the floor, which the Roomba bot quickly removes.
Back in the TARDIS, the Doctor scans Belinda and reveals that her descendant, Mundy Flynn (also Varada Sethu), has already encountered «Boom» last season. Belinda may be curious about how someone so far from this can be identical, but she does not embrace the mystery. The Doctor annoys her because he scanned her without consent and treats her as a puzzle to be solved.
After seeing Sasha55’s death, she knows the danger of being with the Doctor and wants to return to May 24, 2025. They open the TARDIS doors to see the empty space before the Doctor decides to take her «the long way round.»
Once the ship disappears, several objects begin to float in front of the camera: a crushed black box, the twisted wreckage of the Eiffel Tower, Belinda’s star adoption certificate, and a calendar with a day in May, but the 25th marked. Uh-oh.
It’s a lot to get through in such a short episode, just like much of Disney, «The Robot Revolution» feels overloaded to the point of bursting. On one hand, it’s a bit too much to handle. On the other hand, it feels like the show burns through the value of a feature film in a quick shooting. It’s hard to get a tangible sense of stakes, considering how rushed everything is and how many stories, rather than character development, are being shown. We were told that the planet is under the brutal thumb of an evil master, but it plays out like small red ships shooting at buildings in digital matte paintings. We were told that Alan is a fluid, but we never feel anything until after he is revealed to be a bastard. We were told that the Doctor is operating on instructions from a figure in his own future, but it would be nice if some of those were presented.
Davies was instrumental in the revival of Doctor Who and building the cultural juggernaut it has become under his leadership. His role in the show’s history is secure, but still, his Disney series seems to be in terms of his successor, Steven Moffat. «The Robot Revolution» presents a MacGuffin nestled within a mundane bauble, a disjointed narrative, and time-bending shenanigans. It’s not that Moffat doesn’t have these ideas, but you can almost feel Davies trying to bend his less formal, more character-driven style into something else. A cynic might suggest that Davies reacted to not having a single credited episode in Doctor Who Magazine’s latest survey of the series’ greatest episodes, while Moffat has five.
In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the slightly frenetic and disjointed nature of this episode is a deliberate ploy to set the stage for the rest of the season. But still, there’s a sense of strain to a storytelling model that doesn’t quite work.
If the scenario is the weakest part of the episode, then the production design must take the crown for the strongest. The retro-futuristic robots look like a Red Air or a Chevy Belu Ford Thunderbird, while the cleaning robot is clearly styled after a sleek VW Beetle. It’s a pretty humanistic design that today’s Robovac producers want to emulate.
Behind the scenes, Doctor Who is a regular source of gossip, especially given the perennially tenured nature of the stars’ roles. It’s easy to say that management is about to throw in the towel and that this seems true, given that they leave after three or four years. There are a number of recent reports suggesting that the GATWA has already resigned from the show or is on the way out. Many also suggest that the BBC and Disney are refusing to greenlight new episodes until they see how successful this season is. Additionally, the BBC says that funding cuts and inflation have resulted in a real-terms decrease in the budget by £1 billion (around $1.3 billion) in 2010. It doesn’t help that when asked directly about the future of the series in an interview with the BBC’s news-oriented program, Russell T. Davies chose to be equivocal in a way that suggests the show is about to go on ice.
I mention this because of the sequence in which Belinda defeats Alan with the certificate, and the Doctor removes it. He says he needed a Time Lord to absorb the vast amount of energy when he touched the paper. The Doctor then clutches his back as if in great pain, but shrugs it off and is fine for the rest of the episode. However, fans with long memories know that absorbing too much energy from the time vortex is what killed Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor in 2005. Well, that and Eccleston’s decision to leave.
Mrs. Flood seems pleased to be moving on to who ends up as a companion this year. As she is abducted, she calls her neighbor to call the police and tell her parents that she loves them. As the rocket takes off, she tells the audience that they haven’t seen her and goes back inside to avoid meeting the Doctor, who is running in pursuit.
