CCOO Canarias reported a new attack at the Las Palmas I-Salto del Negro prison (Gran Canaria), which occurred last Tuesday, when an inmate from module 4 attacked two officers, causing them serious injuries, so both are on sick leave.
In a statement, the Federation of Citizen Attention (FSC) of the union indicated that the overcrowding in some modules «constitutes an obvious lack of security, so the situation is worsening and the one who always loses is the prison staff. who do not have an effective risk prevention law.
Furthermore, it pointed out that Las Palmas I is not suitable for prisoners whose prototype is very dangerous and there should be other centers with a more secure infrastructure for prison staff and the inmate population itself.
However, the FSC-CCOO added that prison authorities are not concerned about the assaults, «because they consider them part of the officers’ salary and have rejected the application of the prevention law and the measures proposed by the union.»
«The consequences are impunity and an increase in the number and intensity of attacks,» the union organization stated.
They also demanded more human resources, specific training, an effective protocol for preventing assaults, and strategies and measures aimed at providing a comprehensive response to the serious problem of psychiatric pathologies in the prison setting, addressing education, prevention, assistance, and rehabilitation for both inmates with mental illness and their families, including social and family aspects, etc.
