Alianza para lograr 500 MW en almacenamiento en España

Benbros Energy and Return recently celebrated a joint venture agreement with the aim of developing storage projects in Spain for over 500 MW. The initial step consists of 10 projects that will supply 210 MW.

Return, the leading European investor in renewable energy development, announced a strategic agreement with Benbros Energy, a leading company in the renewable energy and sustainability sector, for the development of energy storage projects in Spanish territory. This alliance represents one of the most important energy storage agreements in our country to date.

More energy storage for the country

The joint venture aims to develop over 500 MW in independent storage projects. They currently have a portfolio of 210 MW with access and connection permits spread across 10 projects throughout Spain, with a significant degree of progress in their processing, foreseeing the start of construction of the first one in 2025.

«The agreement with Benbros Energy represents a significant step for our growth strategy in the Spanish energy storage market,” says Steve Sceery, partner at Return. «This collaboration combines our experience in Northern Europe, where we have 70 MW of storage in operation as of 2021 and over 16 GW in various stages of development, with Benbros’ strong presence and execution capability in the Spanish market, allowing us to «This will allow us to accelerate the development of clean and resilient energy solutions in Spain.»

Francisco Ruiz, CEO of Benbros Energy, added: «This alliance represents a relevant milestone in the development of energy storage in Spain. Return’s extensive know-how in international markets, coupled with our solid experience in developing greenfield projects, will allow us to accelerate the implementation of pioneering «stand-alone» storage projects in our country, contributing to the decarbonization and resilience of the energy system.»

This agreement, formalized in August 2024, strengthens Return’s expansion in Spain -where it already operates with its subsidiaries Ekhi and CargaTuCoche- and enhances the storage project platform it is developing in several European countries. consolidating its position as a leader in the energy transition.

Return currently has three storage projects in operation and is finalizing the development of the largest storage project in the Netherlands with a capacity of 364 MW to continue advancing towards its goal of achieving several GW of installed solar energy and storage capacity across the European continent.

Through this alliance, Benbros Energy positions itself as a key player in the energy transition in Spain and strengthens its strategy of technological diversification by establishing partnerships with prominent market leaders, as it has already done with Renewable Power Capital (CPP Investments).

Benbros thus strengthens its presence in key sectors such as solar photovoltaic energy, battery storage, green hydrogen, and sustainable data centers, as well as in innovative industrial projects, such as the synthetic diamond factory in Extremadura in collaboration with Diamond Foundry.

Energy storage is an important and essential step in the development of renewable energies and in the necessary decarbonization process that the EU and all member countries aspire to.
