Se ampliará y reorganizará el departamento de emergencias de San Pedro con un edificio anexo de 700 m2 en tres pisos.

The Minister of Health and Social Policies, María Martín, presented the project for the extension and reorganization of the emergency department at the University Hospital of San Pedro. This project involves the construction of a three-story, 680 square meter annex building near its western facade.
During the presentation, the minister was accompanied by Seris manager Luis Ángel González, hospital care manager Corpus Gómez, maintenance and construction manager Gonzalo Blanco, director of economic management and general services Eduardo Dulce, and emergency services manager Marisa Berges.
Martín emphasized that the aging population in Spain, especially in La Rioja, leads to increased chronic conditions and comorbidities, resulting in higher healthcare resource consumption and complexity. Data shows a high demand for emergency services, particularly between October and March. In 2024, the University Hospital of San Pedro received 124,267 emergency patients, a 6.3% increase from 2023.
The increasing workload has caused discomfort among patients and staff, affecting the quality of care. The project aims to address these challenges by expanding the emergency department, adding more space for patient care. It will also involve hiring additional staff, including nurses and assistants.
The project is part of a larger infrastructure plan that includes the expansion of the University Hospital in San Pedro with a new specialized center for ambulatory surgery. The presentation took place in a prefabricated pavilion that will be replaced by the new building.
The construction project has been approved, and the estimated investment is €1.8 million. The new building will include a new waiting area, six medical consultation rooms, administrative offices, and a library. It will also improve the existing spaces, increasing the number of patient care stations and strengthening pre-hospitalization services.
The design of the unit will focus on creating a common space for outpatient consultations, integrating diagnostic techniques, and enhancing patient care. The new building will provide a total area of 680 square meters, a 27% increase from the current emergency department at the University Hospital of San Pedro.
