PSOE solicitará al gobierno promover la obra de Luisa Carnés y crear premio en su nombre

PSOE will defend itself on Tuesday in the Congress Culture Committee, an incomplete proposal for which the Government urges collaboration with institutions such as the Cervantes Institute to promote the work of writer and journalist from the generation of the 27 Luisa Carnés, and to make known, among other things, an award in her name, which serves to distinguish a new work.

The socialists state this in an initiative on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of her death this year in Mexico, the author of «Mujeres trabajadoras».

Carnés was born in 1905 in the Madrid neighborhood of Las Leras, very close to the Congress, but after the Civil War, she went into exile in Mexico and fell into oblivion. However, her figure began to be recovered a few years ago with the publication of her works.

In their initiative, collected by Europa Press, the PSOE emphasizes that Carnés «represents more than an exception» within the literary group of the 27th Generation, an area dominated by men, so, in addition to reflecting the Spanish reality of her time through her narrative, she was a tireless advocate for women’s rights.

Therefore, they point out that «las salas de té», published in 1934, reflect the situation of working women, especially young women, emphasizing class differences, sexist discrimination, and the double burden of tasks they support in their work and personal lives.

«Carnés knew perfectly the world she wrote about because she herself worked as a waitress and assistant in a place similar to the one described in the novel. The struggle for women’s emancipation is another key to this work, as well as the life of the book itself,» explains PSOE.

It also highlights her facet as a journalist from the late 20s until the Civil War and later in her Mexican exile. «The body of works by Luisa Carnés offers an accurate view of life in Spain and Mexico in the first half of the 20th century,» emphasize the socialists.

Therefore, they consider it «essential to continue to recover her memory, writings, novels, stories, and articles to make them known, but also to recognize the figure of an exceptional author who has been too forgotten,» despite being «an undeniable reference in the field of literature.».

Based on this premise, PSOE affirms that the Congress Culture Committee urges the government to recognize Carnés «as a referential writer in Spanish literature of the 20th century» and to collaborate with administrations and entities in the dissemination of her work.

To do this, they are committed to collaborating with the Cervantes Institute and the Books and Letters program in which Spain also participates to create an award or distinction that bears her name and serves to recognize the activity of women journalists and new writers.
