PP y Vox solicitan presidencia de honor de los Reyes para el 125 aniversario de Buñuel

The text, collected by Europa Press, urges the government to take the necessary actions to request the honorary presidency of this ephemeral event from King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The PNL obtained 24 votes in favor and 12 abstentions.
The Popular Party defended the «Pause and Innovative» cinema of the Buñuel Commission, highlighting its «influence» on several generations of Spanish producers. A cinematographic style that «continues to be an international reference.»
«Buñuel is one of the most influential filmmakers in history and a key figure in world culture. Aware of the value of his legacy and importance, we propose to this chamber that we handle and support the action in the Ministry of Culture through the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts. Commemorate this milestone,» said Popular Party deputy José Alberto Herrero, who originally saw the film being born.
The PP spokesperson asked the PSOE to reconsider its position, as since last November they had «examined» a proposal in Parliament to declare several exceptional events of public interest, including this anniversary.
«It is an opportunity to claim Spain’s role in the history of cinema and to continue spreading the legacy of a creator who knew how to capture with a unique perspective the complexity of the human condition,» he said.
Socialist deputy Josep Paré acknowledged the surprise at the Popular Party’s initiative, as Buñuel «suffered under Franco’s censorship» and corrected the PP that the Oscar won by the film was for a French production. «He was a leftist and was considered a rebel all his life,» he said.
The bitter exchange includes Aragón, the Teruel Provincial Council, and Calanda in the plan to support the commemorative events.
Additionally, it requests that the content of the commemorative events for the 125th anniversary of Luis Buñuel’s birth, considering the ephemeral nature as a culturally declared event of exceptional public interest (AIIP) in order to apply tax benefits.
Vox also supported the initiative, as Buñuel is an intellectual of «prime importance» and warned that Buñuel’s cinema is against the «woke» ideology. «We are interested in Buñuel for his philosophical content. Content that is absolutely against this woke ideology that everyone systematically defends,» said deputy Joaquín Robbles.
On the other hand, the Culture Committee also approved the PSOE’s PNL urging the government to promote, together with the autonomous communities and the FEMP, a strategy of action to preserve cultural heritage and address its climate changes and impact.
An initiative that did not have the support of the PP, which asked to strengthen penalties against vandalism, deeming the proposal «stupid» because it «only serves to create new beach bars.»
On their part, the Socialists managed to gather support to ask the government to promote the work of writer and journalist Luisa Carnés and to create an award in her name, among others. Other PNL were also approved: promoting the candidacy of Castillo de Loarre as a world heritage site, encouraging knowledge about Zarzuela among young people, and promoting the projection of traditional crafts and trades in Spain.
In contrast, the Committee rejected the PNL to improve the working conditions of artists, presented by the Republican parliamentary group.
