The second vice president of the Government, Yolanda Díaz, criticized that the plan to raise the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is not just a «lexical» problem, because «the conception of Europe based on social welfare. In turn, she warned that «it seriously reduces strategic autonomy.»
«A rearmament is not urgently needed, but a reconstruction of the European project, which needs to be relaunched and whose fundamental priority must be to provide security and protection to all European citizens,» she defended in a statement shared on social media, which reflects her position on this matter.
In this sense and in terms of security in the current geopolitical context, Díaz emphasizes that the EU has already invested 374,000 million, three times more than Russia (which invaded Ukraine over three years ago).
She stated that it is not about «multiplying national military spending,» but about «better coordination» and «ensuring the interoperability of our armed forces» with an autonomous project «far from subordination» to the United States.
«Our stability cannot depend on the instability of others,» said the Minister of Labor, who insists that an arms race goes in the «opposite direction» that Europe needs.
Díaz has argued that von der rearming the reading plan «is not a simple lexical» or «nominal» problem, but contradicts the idea of Europe based on «global work, peace, and security.»
«I insist, it is not about changing a word, but about changing a whole European project. The REST project presented by Ursula von der Leyen and the project of strategic autonomy and European security that we represent is profoundly different. Our idea of security aims to fill the gaps in European policy,» she proclaimed.
Precisely the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, said that he does not share the term «rearmament» adopted by the President of the European Commission to baptize the plan by which the twenty-seven increase in defense.
On the other hand, the European Commission has opened up to change its communication on defense initiatives of the community, not only to address the «sensitivities» that this narrative raises in some Member States, according to the criticisms of Sánchez and the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
Today, adding, through her organization secretary, Lara Hernández, warned that she does not want «euphemism» in defense and demanded from the President of the Government, before his appearance in Congress on Wednesday, that he is happy that the term «rearmament» is rejected, but it will be more than just words.
In writing, Díaz emphasized that in recent weeks, a fundamental debate is taking place in the present and future, both in Spain and in Europe, regarding the role that must be taken in a «fragile world,» «where the threats of inequality, the climate crisis, hatred, digital oligarchy, and the day.
«It is a complex debate that ranges from the role of NATO to the defense of Ukraine, through the European economy and its institutions,» she insisted that a security project must incorporate the dimensions of «European reindustrialization,» digital energy, and sovereignty.
«It is essential that the center of that project be the idea of defending peace and security within the United Nations, in a world that Europe needs to be multilateral and not multipolar,» she said to add a new social contract for Europe.
