Negociaciones en marcha para unidades de Policía Nacional en Galicia, Aragón y Valencia tras acuerdo con Andalucía

The Ministry of the Interior maintains the agreement with Xunta de Galicia for the unit of police attached to this autonomous community, following the recent agreement signed with Andalusia. Additionally, negotiations are ongoing with the governments of Aragon and the Valencian community, according to sources in Europe from this ministerial department.

These units are under the authority of the General Directorate of the National Police, although they operate within the internal councils of the autonomous communities, as stipulated in the agreements signed.

As per the agreements with each autonomous community, the attached police assume functions ranging from the security of authorities and autonomous facilities to the supervision of minor offenders, aspects such as school protection, and the environment.

Negotiations with the PP-governed autonomous community were initiated a year after the impasse and the sending of a letter in January 2024, in which the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, called for the sharing of half the costs of these attached units of the National Police.

In that letter, Marlaska responded to the complaints from the regional governments of the PP, acknowledging the «difficulties» caused by the non-inclusion of these units.

«I am fully committed to making every effort necessary for the preservation and recovery of their capabilities,» stated the Minister of the Interior.

In this regard, Grande-Marlaska added that it was «essential» for the autonomous communities to contribute to the financing of their respective attached units, covering an annual amount equivalent to 50% of the maintenance costs, in accordance with Organic Law 2/1986.

Negotiations led by the Secretary of Security of the State were finalized with the signing of the agreement with the Andalusian Junta on February 13th.

The Andalusian government pledged to cover 50% of the personnel’s remuneration and assume the corresponding expenses for investments, maintenance of facilities, technical resources, and the necessary workforce for the unit to carry out its activities, according to sources from the Ministry of the Interior.

«After years of claims and proposals to the Ministry, today it is a reality thanks to institutional dialogue and loyalty,» stated Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s councilor for the presidency and interior. The agreement includes a four-year offer to the National Police Unit with 270 troops, totaling 632 agents.

On the other hand, Xunta de Galicia and the Ministry of the Interior have started negotiations at the highest level to renew the agreement for the National Police units assigned to the autonomous community, as confirmed on February 21st, according to sources from both governments.

The funding for this unit established in Galicia in 1991 is on the table, as well as the request for more efficient supply, a demand that has been expressed several times by the Galician Parliament.
