Los estudiantes de medicina rechazan el estado del marco de salud y piden limitar guardias médicos a 12 horas

The students of the State Medical Council (CEEE) expressed their rejection of the framework for healthcare professionals prepared by the Ministry of Health and Claims, among other points, stating that medical guards should have a maximum of 12 hours.

«The students believe that medical guards should last 12 hours due to the high physical and mental demands on the workers,» said Javier Girón, the vice president of external affairs of the State Council of State Medical Students (CEEM), during a press conference on Friday.

In this way, the students demand a 12-hour medical guard, while the proposed maximum in the state framework is 17 hours. The number of hours in the shift is one of the demands made by the students through a manifesto that rejects other points of the state project. Therefore, the students also opposed the exclusivity for five years after completing medical training.

«After completing training, medical professionals should not have exclusive rights to work for five years in the public health service. They should be able to choose to work in the public or private sector or both at the same time, without being restricted to public service,» Girón said.

From CEEM, they request that healthcare leaders working in the public health sector be allowed to combine their work with possible employment in the private health sector without limitations.

The manifesto, signed by approximately 5% of medical students in Spain, also advocates for medical professionals working part-time or full-time in public health not to be limited in combining this work with a job in the private health sector.

Despite this, CEEM announced that they will participate in a demonstration on Saturday in Madrid against the state project.

In addition to the state framework, students have called for greater university training on artificial intelligence (AI) applied to medicine, considering it a potentially valuable tool.

«The students demand that AI be included in university programs, either as a dedicated subject or integrated into existing courses,» said Isaac Piñiro, the general treasurer of the State Council of Cech.

At present, Piñiro explained that few Spanish universities provide students with this type of information. Some faculties offer optional subjects related to AI, while others are starting to include competencies in areas such as bioinformatics, documentation, and research topics. However, students are requesting that all faculties incorporate these competencies.

Students also believe that the use of AI should be limited during their training. They also urge teachers to refrain from using AI to correct assignments unless it is for objective purposes, such as test exams.
