Tesla changes the name of FSD autonomous driving technology in China after authorities’ intervention and fines for customers

Tesla’s autonomous driving technology underwent a significant review in China after regulatory authorities intervened. The system, known as «Full Self-Driving» (FSD) in the United States, has been renamed to «Intelligent Assisted Leadership,» reflecting a more realistic level of automation. However, some customers who tested Tesla’s assisted driving system would receive fines for apparent road violations while the car was in autonomous mode.

Authorities’ intervention in Tesla’s autonomous driving test in China

The name change came shortly after the suspension of the free FSD trial in China, just a week after its launch. The program, scheduled to run from March 17 to April 16, allowed Tesla customers in China to test the technology on urban roads. However, the trial phase sparked mixed reactions with numerous instances of road violations captured by police cameras and reported to vehicle owners.

Issues and penalties during the Tesla FSD trial phase

Several Tesla owners reportedly received fines due to their driving behavior while the car was in FSD mode. Common violations included improper use of bike lanes and merging lanes.

In one specific case, a car racked up a total of 7 fines on a single trip. Chinese roads are extensively monitored by closed-circuit cameras that allow authorities to automatically issue penalties.

As a result, Tesla has renamed other assisted driving features to comply with Chinese regulations. The «Enhanced Automated Driving Version» is now called «Enhanced Assisted Management.» Similarly, Tesla’s basic driving assistance software, known in many countries as Tesla’s Autopilot, has been renamed to «Basic Assisted.»

In China, the «Intelligent Assisted Leadership» system is sold for around $8,818, while customers with the «Enhanced Autopilot» can upgrade at a low cost to approximately $4,409 after the recent changes.
