The delegate for Economy, Innovation, and Finance, Engracia Hidalgo, visited the «workshop» of Maison Mesa this morning, one of the companies that will participate in Madrid Fashion Week, which will take place from September 7 to 16 and includes the program of events of the municipal project to support designer fashion, Madrid es Moda, and the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid (MBFWM) 2024 runway.
During the visit to the workshop established by designer and creative Juan Carlos Mesa in 2017 in the heart of Madrid, Hidalgo highlighted the experience of over 30 years dedicated to fashion design and style by one of the most important names in the industry in Spain. A career that has led him to work with major brands and designers and, for the past seven years, has had his own haute couture house, receiving numerous awards such as the L’Oréal Paris award for the best collection at MBFWM, the award for the best Sewing Atelier in Madrid, the Designer of the Year Award from Hoy Magazine, the Pasarela Española Life Award, or the Alegria de Vivir Award for the Best Haute Couture Designer.
Hidalgo highlighted the «enormous talent possessed by Spanish designers, where creativity, inspiration, and style come together» and emphasized a key sector for the economy where «Madrid residents spend an average of nearly 377.21 euros per year,» in her words. of the municipal economic manager and according to data from the National Association of Textile, Accessories, and Leather Trade (ACOTEX), the most representative organization of the sector in Spain.
An activity that, as explained by the delegate, generated 2.176 billion euros in 2023 in the Community of Madrid, with 6,125 points of sale and 26,132 workers at that time.
Fashion merges with the streets of the capital during Madrid Fashion Week
The next edition of Madrid Fashion Week will feature a spectacular opening parade at the Puerta de Alcalá, the most emblematic monument in Madrid and one of the most photographed in Spain, which becomes the epicenter of the celebrations with a runway located near the monument, where 50 models will showcase the creations of the designers participating in this edition of Madrid es Moda.
The podium will be surrounded by a grandstand with 400 seats, and the parade can be followed from different points in the city, as it will have live streaming of the event.
The delegate highlighted the «exceptionality of this event,» the result of «necessary public-private collaboration» that transforms a «heritage emblem of the city of Madrid and also of the Landscape of Light» into an «unparalleled sustainable urban environment.» fashion sector, showcasing the talent of Spanish designers and creators’ and ‘positioning Madrid at the forefront of the national industry and as an international reference in fashion.’
Organized by the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain (ACME) with the support of the Madrid City Council through the Madrid Capital de la Moda program, the runway will inaugurate Madrid Fashion Week, starting with Madrid es Moda from September 8 to 11 and its events at various points in the city, serving as the prelude to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid celebration from September 12 to 16.
The Puerta de Alcalá will not be the only setting chosen to present the new fall-winter fashion collections. The monument will once again position Madrid as the world capital of fashion.
Ten days of talent-filled shows
The Madrid es Moda event will begin its fashion shows on September 8 and will continue until the 11th of that month. Four days with over 30 events from brands and creators like Acromatyx, Anton Heunis, Canary Islands of Fashion, Carlota Barrera, Coconutscankill, Corsicana, Daniel Chong, Devota & Lomba, Dolores Cortés, Dominnico, Duyos, Evade House, García Madrid, Javier Delafuente, Juan Avellaneda x See Iou, Juan Vidal, Juanjo Oliva, Leandro Cano, Maison Mesa, Malne, María Lafuente, Miguel Marinero, Moisés Nieto, Nicolás Montenegro, Odette Álvarez, Oteyza, Pedro del Hierro, Peñalver Brand, Pilar Dalbat, Roberto Torretta, Roberto Verino, Teresa Helbig, The Extreme Collection, Tíscar Espadas, and SOMOS SPASTOR.
On the other hand, the 80th edition of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid will take place from September 12 to 16 and will feature models from Angel Schlesser, Isabel Sanchis, Hannibal Laguna, Berhanyer, JCPajares, Álvaro Calafat, and Malne.
Municipal support for the fashion industry
The Madrid City Council continues its policies to support the fashion industry with a new request for grants for the fashion sector, corresponding to the year 2024, amounting to 500,000 euros, extendable to another 500,000 euros. The grants add to the municipal aid that the sector can benefit from through the three previously approved calls this year to support the functioning of the associative fabric, promoting digitalization, associationism, training, and commercial dynamism.
