Antonio Romero Ruiz, who was the coordinator of Izquierda Unida Andalucía, passed away this Friday, after having a long parliamentary career in both the Congress of Deputies and the Andalusian Parliament, where he was a deputy for two terms, in the I and II Legislature, and VI and VII.
Born in 1955 in Humilladero (Málaga), Romero passed away at the Antequera Hospital after a few days of hospitalization, as confirmed by sources from this organization to Europa Press.
The death of Antonio Romero, a charismatic figure in Andalusian politics, with a national political presence due to his time in Congress, has garnered a myriad of reactions from national and regional political leaders.
Among them, the Vice President and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, declared on her personal account the foundations on which to build all our policies. Her post is illustrated with a photograph showing Antonio Romero alongside the late Julio Anguita.
The current federal coordinator of Izquierda Unida, Antonio Maíllo, described Antonio Romero’s legacy as «communist and militant joy», calling for «honor and glory» for the «beloved Antonio».
«His career is an example of commitment and struggle to improve the lives of people that he never stopped embodying,» Maíllo said about his figure.
Another leader of Izquierda Unida, former minister and former federal coordinator of this organization, Alberto Garzón, portrayed Antonio Romero as «a lucid and brave person» who «never stopped informing himself and fighting for a fairer world», while emphasizing his role as a «historical leader from Malaga of the PCE and IU».
The Secretary General of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) and deputy for Córdoba, Enrique Santiago, described Romero as «a laborer who fought all his life for the working class and the Communist Party», before considering that «we plant the dear and irreplaceable companion Antonio Romero too soon», wishing that «the earth receives you with the same affection with which you defended it».
At the regional level, the coordinator of IU Andalucía, Toni Valero, stated that «one of the most illustrious people of the Andalusian people has passed away», highlighting that he had a privileged mind and an unwavering commitment.
«He carried with him the affection and brotherhood of someone who always knew how to be among the humblest,» Valero said about the human side of Antonio Romero, concluding by highlighting that «we learned from him and will continue in his trenches».
