Goodbye waste, hello homes

It turns out that the energy company Cascada in collaboration with the design studio microlights transformed the nacelle of a wind turbine into a fully functional mini-house!

The central hub of the wind turbine was carefully dismantled after it completed its operational life in Austria, where it had worked for over twenty years, and was turned into a house. It has dimensions of 10 meters long, 4 meters wide, and 3 meters high.

The house includes a kitchen, a bathroom, and a comfortable living room, and it also features advanced technologies such as a heat pump, solar panels, and a truly impressive solar water heater.

«We are looking for innovative ways to reuse the turbine materials used as completely as possible» «which saves raw materials, energy consumption, and in this way, we ensure that these materials are useful for many years after their initial lifespan.». explicitly stated Thomas Hjort, Director of Innovation at Vattenfall.

With this project, the company has shown that it is possible to give a second life to the components of wind turbines, reducing the impact on the environment of their disposal. By recycling and reusing these components, Vattenfall not only extends the life of valuable materials but also offers a more sustainable alternative to addressing the challenges that arise when dismantling these infrastructures.

Great challenges, excellent results

Of course, transforming a wind turbine into a house was a major challenge, as they had to work in a very small area while also complying with building regulations. But despite these limitations, the final result is a compact and comfortable home that sets a new standard for sustainable living in small spaces.

And if that weren’t enough! The house has also been furnished using durable and second-hand furniture, including a table made from material from a recycled wind turbine blade.

An example worth following

This wonderful construction shows us that it is possible to reuse wind turbine materials and, at the same time, shows us that home construction can also be sustainable.

In fact, this type of construction should be replicated in various places around the world. Krieger, the senior partner, supports this idea and believes that construction has significant scalability potential. «Thousands of similar turbines are waiting to be dismantled around the world. This project demonstrates the enormous potential to reuse these structures and create sustainable communities».

Therefore, these types of advancements bring us closer to the energy transition, demonstrating that even the «waste» from renewable technologies can be transformed into a resource and that construction can also be respectful of our planet, as evidenced by the 6 most sustainable megastructures in the world.
