El sector turístico en Andalucía comienza el año con casi 450,000 empleados, un aumento del 9.5%

The employment of tourist labor began the year with the consolidation of the positive trend it had already experienced during 2024. In the first quarter of 2025, the sector registered 448,056 employed workers in Andalusia, representing a 9.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024, despite a slight decrease this week. This growth, second only to Madrid, places Andalusia’s growth above the national average of 1.2%, with a total of 2,787,704 workers employed in the sector.
Of the total sector employees in Andalusia, 363,538 were employees, while the rest (84,518) were self-employed. Particularly noteworthy is the year-on-year increase of 11.9% in employed car workers, compared to an 8.9% increase in employees for the same period the year before.
Nationally, between January and March 2025, according to data published on Friday by Turespaña, tourism-related activities saw an increase of 34,347 employees compared to the same quarter the previous year. Employees in the tourism sector during this period accounted for 12.8% of the total employment in the Spanish economy.
Regarding territorial distribution, the number of employees in nine autonomous communities increased. Among the main communities, employment increased by 10.3% in Madrid, with Andalusia being the second community in the country to experience the highest employment growth at 9.5%. On the other hand, Catalonia saw a 5.8% decrease in sectoral employment, while Valencia experienced a 2.7% decrease. Employment remained relatively stable in regions such as the Balearic and Canary Islands.
In the first quarter of the year, the main tourism activities in Spain saw an increase, except for hospitality, where the Easter effect was observed. Consequently, hospitality decreased by 1%, attributed to the negative evolution of food and beverage (-2.8%) offset by the increase in accommodation services (5.7%).
In travel agencies, there was a positive variation of 21.9%, while passenger transportation also saw a positive increase of 3.4%. Salaries in the tourism sector during this period rose to 2,327,588, with an intensity of 2.8%. Therefore, the year-on-year increases from the previous quarter continue.
These salaries showed increases in passenger transportation (5.2%) and hospitality (1.2%), as well as other tourism activities (5.4%). Within hospitality, both accommodation services and food and beverage sectors saw increases. In other tourism activities, travel agencies recorded a 23.4% increase.
Employees in the tourism sector with permanent contracts (85.3%) saw a 2.7% increase year-on-year, marking the fifteenth consecutive growth. Temporary contract salaries also increased by 2.9%. The temporary employment rate (temporary contract employees/total employees) in the tourism sector was 14.7%, the same as the previous year, but lower than the overall economy’s temporary rate of 15.1%.
