El Parque Retiro will remain closed, unable to be ventured once it opens, after the large trees fell yesterday following the intense afternoon rains, said the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, at an emergency press conference.
«At this moment it indicates (closure) whenever the appropriate conditions are not met, and it is better not to establish a time frame because it is a serious risk to people’s integrity,» the councilor conveyed.
From the city council, they prefer not to provide possible reopening dates, especially after the fall of the large trees, because they do not want to «endanger» anyone.
Almeida noted that this diminishing rain «is very damaging to the trees, as the soil softens and facilitates the falling of specimens that may be in a fragile situation more easily.» «It is important to always prioritize the safety of physical integrity and life,» he insisted.
Before reopening Retiro and other historic parks in the city, technicians will conduct an assessment of the forest’s condition to determine whether the necessary safety conditions are met or not.
