El alcalde de León aguarda la decisión del PSOE sobre la autonomía.

«Si this has a real path, if there is a determined commitment from the Socialist Party for an autonomous project for León, we will see that this is a reality and no one can feel disappointed,» explained Diez, who emphasized that yes, on the other hand, «This was something symbolic and has no significance,» it will be shown that it is «a political tactic and has nothing to do with the desire of the people of León.»

He defended this during the awards ceremony of the XXXVII Chess Master Tournament «Ciudad de León,» in statements to Europa Press, in which he reiterated the single-province autonomy model as the one that has «more chances» of prospering.

«We cannot continue talking about the region of León, when we know that this is a dead end. We have to go towards something that can really have future expectations,» insisted a councilor from León who also expressed his wish for the autonomy debate «to be taken to the Congress of Deputies and the Senate.»

The mayor reviewed the projection of the motion of León four years ago, when it was approved in the Municipal Council of León, and indicated that «now it has changed substantially»: mainly due to the positioning in favor of the Provincial Council, «which represents the majority of the municipalities in the province»; and secondly because «there was also a response from the Government that did not exist before.»

According to the presentation by the first mayor of León, the future autonomous community would have a very difficult time prospering if it does not have the support of the Socialist Party and the Popular Party and if there is no political figure with sensitivity on this issue, either in the Government or in the Chambers, to act as an intermediary.

Diez also described as «logical and coherent» the position of the regional secretary of the Socialist Party of Castilla y León, Luis Tudanca, and positively valued the idea of consulting the membership about a PSOE position in favor of a new autonomy.

Through a statement last Friday, Tudanca had supported the Government’s decision to consider legitimate what was proposed in the motion approved in the Provincial Council of León and that he would wait to see what happens in the Congress of Deputies.

Juan Antonio Diez explained that this consultation should be carried out by the Federal Directorate of the party, since within the statutes there would be no authority to consult the autonomous bodies.

He also emphasized that it would be important to know what is being asked and to whom it is being asked: «If you ask the militants of León you would talk about single-province autonomy (…) and if we talk about the region, we would also have to ask Zamora and Salamanca.» Taking these conditions into account, «the result of the vote will be very uneven,» affirmed the socialist mayor.
