The Digital Rural Challenge program aims to promote the development of digital training initiatives for inhabitants in rural areas, with a special emphasis on the most vulnerable groups in the rural environment: the elderly, the unemployed, or children and young people.
The goal is to promote the acquisition of basic digital skills by citizens, so they can operate confidently and securely when communicating, informing, making efforts, or navigating the digital environment. A program that complements digital progress between cities and towns, which decreased by 36 points in 2018.
«The digital divide with cities decreased from 42 points in 2018 to 6 in 2024. It is a success in the country, a necessary condition to create opportunities in rural areas. And, with the Satellite Coverage Program of Concrtate35, promoted by Hispasat, connectivity in rural broadband is 100%,» Agesen said.
Among the beneficiaries of the final resolution announced by the vice president, there are 10 local entities, provincial dates, and 30 non-profit associations that will provide training in basic digital skills to equal or less than 5,000 inhabitants, or in municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants when the action takes place in smaller municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants with dispersed population centers, provided that the actions take place in these centers.
Diputacia de Badajoz, the university company foundation in the Mercia region, Diputacia de Ourense, Diputacia a Coruña, or the Union of Small Farmers are some of the entities receiving the highest funding to carry out their projects, with assistance of up to 750,000 euros.
The training will be delivered before the second quarter of 2026, with special attention to young people, women, the unemployed, and the elderly. Therefore, by implementing this program, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge expects to train a total of 110,000 students, representing a 22% increase compared to the goals set in the recovery plan, which includes the commitment to train 90,000 people.
